This Saturday – Jackson Square Holiday Shopping Event

This Saturday, December 4th, from 12-4pm, Jackson Square Merchants Association is sponsoring a holiday shopping event with plenty of holiday cheer, including a guest appearance by Santa and a boozy coffee bar, along with select discounts rarely offered by a few member businesses. All ages are welcome with hope that everyone has the chance to come and experience what Jackson Square has to offer.

BCNA’s Major Accomplishments This Year

The Barbary Coast Neighborhood Association has been working hard to advance the interests of Barbary Coast neighbors and businesses. Here’s a look back at some of the highlights of the past twelve months.

BCNA represents the neighborhood in local government and community groups

  • Meet regularly with Supervisor Aaron Peskin on neighborhood priorities such as homelessness and loss of local retail
  • Submitted city budget proposals for increased traffic enforcement and a dedicated Homeless Outreach Team for our neighborhood
  • Serve on the Community Police Advisory Board regarding crime and safety concerns
  • Serve on the Port’s Northeast Waterfront Advisory Group (NEWAG), providing input on local projects
  • Participate in Waterfront Design Advisory Committee meetings on neighborhood projects
  • Represent the community in the Coalition of San Francisco Neighborhoods (CSFN) to address common issues across the city’s neighborhoods
  • Collaborate with Telegraph Hill Dwellers and North Beach Neighbors
  • Advocate on DIstrict 3 issues, including site selection for a Homeless Navigation Center
  • Monitor and act on state legislation affecting our neighborhood, including SB 50 (rezoning to increase housing density—OPPOSE); SB 58 (extend late night closing for entertainment—OPPOSE)

BCNA takes action on local development projects 

  • Engage with city officials and local groups on waterfront development
  • Served on 88 Broadway developer selection committee, resulting in plans for family (130 units) and senior (52 units) housing designated for low-middle income households and active retail and community serving spaces
  • Meet with Teatro ZinZanni representatives to review project development (planned for 2020)
  • Spoke in support of Teatro ZinZanni project before the San Francisco Planning and Port Commissions
  • Participated in community meetings in support of homelessness solutions, including appropriate sites for a Homeless Navigation Center
  • Participate in review of the Port’s Waterfront Land Use Plan, including development of historic piers
  • Opposed Broadway clubs’ petition to Planning Commission for extended closing times
  • Continue to monitor the impact of Broadway clubs’ 4 AM closing time in collaboration with adjacent neighborhood organizations

BCNA sponsors forums and informational events 

  • Hosted forums on SFMTA’s proposed traffic changes for Sansome/Battery/Davis Streets
  • Sponsored an informational forum on 2018 ballot propositions featuring Assemblyman David Chiu and Supervisor Aaron Peskin
  • Hosted free Neighborhood Emergency Response Team (NERT) workshop on disaster preparation
  • Provided timely updates to our members on key issues by email, on our the BCNA website, and on the BCNA Facebook page

BCNA builds community through social events and membership drives

  • Host regular “walkabouts” and safety forums with the current Central Station Police Captain
  • Hold regular “Sunday Social” events for our residents and business owners
  • Organize historical walking tours along the historic waterfront
  • Sponsor annual family-focused Halloween party, egg hunt, picnic, and park clean-up events
  • Collaborate with the Golden Gateway Tenants Association to broaden representation and membership
  • Work with SFPD and Public Works to raise safety awareness for businesses and residents
  • Conduct membership survey to plan future activities

We plan to host forums in 2019 on the latest neighborhood developments, including Port and SFMTA activities, updates on 88 Broadway and Teatro ZinZanni, and more—stay tuned!
