Legislation aimed at limiting liquor licenses on Broadway

OFFICIAL BCNA NEWS

A diverse group of community members have been working with District 3 Supervisor David Chiu to limit liquor licenses along Broadway adjacent to the Barbary Coast neighborhood.

The highlights of the proposed legislation:

– Prevents NEW liquor stores and nightclubs (bars with no food)

– Impacts only 2 blocks of Broadway, the 400 and 500 blocks

– Expires after 2 years

– Does not impact current licenses or permits

– Permits transferability within the zone

“We are hoping this 2-year pause will allow security improvements and revitalization efforts to take hold,” said Stephanie
Greenberg, President of the SoTel (South Telegraph Hill) Neighbors group.

“We want to make the area safer and more appealing to new and diverse visitors and businesses. We are also hoping make it a less arduous process to open restaurants in the area, as it is now easier to open a bar,” she added.

The Barbary Coast Neighborhood Association is considering joining the Broadway Community Benefit District (all 9 Board members signed), Telegraph Hill Dwellers, North Beach Business Association, SoTel Neighbors, Central Station, and 59 residents and business owners in support of the legislation.
