In the classic baseball film “Field of Dreams,” the often-quoted line  is, “If you build it, they will come.”
This is happening on our shores. The Port of San Francisco‘s longtime dream of a  modern new cruise terminal has materialized at Pier 27, and 2014 is a record-setting year for the number of cruise passengers coming to the fabled San Francisco waterfront.
The totals are 75 cruise ship calls and 260,000 cruise travelers. Of the 75 calls, 14 are overnight ship calls.
As for 2015, the Port already has 82 ship calls booked. That should “crack the 300,000-passenger mark,” according to Maritime Marketing  Manager Michael Nerney.
He said that San Francisco serves as a year-round homeport for round-trip ship cruises to Alaska, Hawaii and Mexico.
Another fortunate feature of the September inauguration of the James R. Herman Cruise Terminal is that shoreside electrical power will be back at Pier 27 to help keep the air clear in this rapidly-growing coastside city.
Nerney pointed out that on non-cruise days, Pier 27 will be available as “San Francisco’s newest facility for conferences, trade shows, and special events.”
While not yet completed as a cruise terminal, Pier 27 served as the headquarters for the 34th America’s Cup races last year.
When the new cruise terminal opens for its principal purpose, it will have a mobile passenger boarding bridge, a 3-acre provisioning area, and a 2.7-acre ground transportation area.
The Northeast Wharf Plaza, a 2.5-acre public park, is also a much-desired part of this major, long-dreamed-of project for the Port of  San Francisco.
